2010 season begins - with training

on tap this ride season: training base miles around home; more training miles and find some climbs in South Carolina (border with NC) along the Blue Ridge Mountain - Caesar’s Head climb,  George Hincapie land…

July - Tour for Kids Alberta (3 day ride that begins outside of Banff, heading north toward Lake Louise and Jasper; then east back south arriving back in Calgary). A climbing we will go, a climbing we will go….

August - Tour for Kids Ontario (4 day ride north of Mississauga - Vaughn toward Peterborough and back) - gorgeous roads and scenery

September - National Kids Cancer Ride - Vancouver to Halifax (oh dear, here we go again). On a sad note, Marisa, whom we met in Winnipeg on the ‘08 and ‘09 rides passed away at the beginning of March after a long, courageous battle with cancer. She is the girl in the wheelchair on the ‘08 documentary.

save the best for last…..YVR - free (and fast) wi-fi

Wow, it would seem that I am back in the land of living. Waiting at YVR for my flight (4 hours ahead of time - you’d think we were preparing to fly to the moon or something). Best news ever, with 4 hours to hang out, YVR has free high speed internet access!!  Can hardly remember what that is like!!

Shall I post some more videos? Perhaps I will load those tomorrow or sometime next week. I also have a HUGE amount of other photos to load (just never had time) from the Alpine events as well as Sliding events, so stay tuned. Some excellent shots of the men’s and women’s downhill events. I will post a few of each to give you a flavor from the sidelines perspective as they rattle down the hill at 100 ++++,  and show the rest on a slide show at some point if anyone is interested.

Heavy, heavy rain here today. Hopefully the remaining Alpine event will go ahead today without incident and injury. How about speed skating yesterday!!

Nordic Norway

Yesterday was another outstanding day at WOP - no wonder Norway is cleaning up at biathlon and cross country. Men’s 4 x 7.5 km relay was a thriller. the heavy snow all day made for interesting results at the shooting range. It was also my last day at the 2010 Olympic Games! It has been a remarkable experience of a lifetime. I am proud to have been able to contribute in some small way. Biathlon and ski jump are now finished, the long distance cross country races remain today and Sunday. The weather made for a damp day yesterday and by the end of it we were ready to see all athletes and spectators leave the venue!
Managed to get to Whistler village to catch some of the hockey game (yeah Canada!). Unfortunate loss for women’s curling, in extra end. They had two great opportunities to finish it off, but Sweden pulled it off. It’s not over yet….men’s hockey tomorrow!

Canadian Women’s Hockey takes GOLD!!!!

What an outstanding game and gold medal for Canadian women’s hockey team! Such tremendous pressure to take the gold, and they did not disappoint. Great to see the familiar face of Peter from days at McGill. Hopefully the Men’s team can follow up with gold as well on Sunday. Melissa H, if you are reading - this one is for you as I know you would appreciate being here as much as I have (especially meeting and chatting with Dr.Arne). I will be back home to watch it the game on Sunday from the sofa
!
Today started with light sleet and it continued with mixed precipitation throughout the day. Heavy winds first delayed the men’s individual nordic combined event. Then the judges decided to start the entire competition over again at 11 a.m so that no athletes had an advantage. The Austrian was in the lead after the jump portion. We have all figured this event really plays out on how well you can ski. The 10km cross country race was another thriller. The US guys took gold and silver, what a kick to the finish. I have been incredibly busy trying to fit in as much as possible. Just back from the medal ceremony for the Women’s bobsleigh - I wish you could all experience this type of celebration “live” at some point. It is breathtaking to see, feel, and be part of the Nation’s pride.
I have been asked what the “best Olympic moment” has been, and I would have to say that it comes down to a tremendous sense of pride for being part of a select group of Medical Team members, and a huge volunteer workforce that helped make these Games happen. A privilege and honor on a personal and professional level.

For “the young ones out there”, as corny as this may sound, believe in your dreams, work hard and persevere, chase down what you want….it is there for the taking. Life is way to short so go out and get it.

Canadian Women Bobsleigh rocket down the track

Yahooooooooo!!!  Just back from the Women’s 2 person bobsleigh competition and Canada takes Gold and Silver -  AWESOME! It has snowed and rained on and off all day today the track has been fast. Tonight, Canada 1 and Canada 2 did not disappoint. I will have to get to the Medal ceremony tomorrow night to celebrate. Outstanding!

Spent the day at the Men’s 4 x 10 km relay cross country and that was a spectacular, thrilling race to be at. Sweden, Czech, Norway, Germany, Austria, Canada played cat and mouse throughout each leg of the race.  A true athletic pursuit that challenged each athlete to ‘leave nothing left in the tank’. Canada had a great showing, considering a very young team, strong finish and ended up in 7th place. Sweden to the Gold, thanks to a burst and surge with 1 km to go. Norway came from behind to take the Silver and Czech took bronze.

The women were out at the Alpine course again in less than ideal conditions. Reports are that Lindsay Vonn took a spill and broke a pinky finger. We shall see how things go for Friday’s race. Tomorrow we’ve got the Women’s cross country relay as well as the Individual Nordic Combined event…going to be another busy day at WOP.

Canada beat out Russia in hockey tonight as we made our way to Bobsleigh - let’s hope they push through the semi-final now. Women’s team goes up against USA tomorrow ….go Canada go.

Amazing how the time has passed so quickly. Another 2 days of event coverage for me with the Medical Team and I make my way home on Saturday. Will have some incredible memories to keep, lots of stories to tell.
